We surveyed Nigerian employees to understand their preferences when it comes to festive perks from their bosses or companies. Read on to unwrap the findings and reveal the patterns that emerged from our survey!
Our group of respondents had an even split between men and women.
Among the female respondents, 43.90% were aged 20-25, 26.83% were 26-29, 21.95% were in their 30s, and 7.32% were 40+.
For the male respondents, 46.34% were 20-25, 29.27% were 26-29, 19.51% were in their 30s, and 4.88% were 40+.
We grouped and presented the most popular corporate Christmas gifts to our respondents and asked them to choose the gift they'd prefer to receive from their companies:
As expected, the majority of respondents (67.07%) chose the classic Christmas Bonus as their most-preferred Christmas gift, proving that cash really is the Christmas Green.
Coming in second was Gift Cards / Vouchers with 15.85% of the votes. Extended Holiday and Gift Hamper / Groceries shared the third spot, each capturing 8.54% of preferences, while Company Swag / Branded Merch failed to make it to anyone's wishlist.
Of the 67.07% respondents that chose Christmas Bonus as their top Christmas gift, we found that 50.91% of them were Female and 49.09% were male, maintaining a nearly even split.
Notably, the age group 20-25 (for both the Male and Female respondents) were responsible for most of the Christmas Bonus votes.
Note: This could be largely due to the fact that about 45% of the total respondents are aged 20-25.
Gift Cards/Vouchers captured 15.85% of preferences, with an interesting gender and age dynamic.
Among those favoring this option, 53.85% were females, with a significant 42.86% in their early 20s. Male respondents (46.15%) also predominantly belonged to the 20-29 age group, indicating that Gift Cards / Vouchers appeal more to the younger workforce.
8.54% of the respondents chose Extended Holiday as their first-choice Christmas gift. This choice, driven by a desire for relaxation and quality family time during the holidays, had a notable gender disparity. Only 28.57% of those who favoured this perk were female, while 71.43% were male.
Selected by 8.54% as well, Gift Hamper / Groceries was picked for its festive treats and feast potential.
Most of the respondents who opted for this choice were in their early 20s. According to them, gift hampers embody the true spirit of Christmas and eases the stress and cost of grocery shopping.
We took a deeper dive into the age, gender, and job trends. Here's what we found:
Across all age groups, Christmas Bonus emerged as the top choice, with the early 20s and late 20s demographics showing the highest preference (64.86% and 73.91%, respectively).
Gift Card/Voucher secured the second spot for all age groups, indicating a consistent trend in desire for personalized choices.
Both genders predominantly favoured Christmas Bonus. However, female respondents showed a slightly higher inclination towards Christmas Bonus, Gift Cards / Vouchers, and Gift Hampers / Groceries (a 2.44% difference). Whereas, more male respondents favoured Extended Holiday (a 7.32% difference).
Marketers leaned towards Christmas Bonus (52.62%) but also displayed a notable interest in Gift Card/Voucher (26.32%). Developers & Engineers and Management roles also showcased a preference for Christmas Bonus, while Finance & Operations unanimously opted for this festive cash gift.
We also asked the respondents for their second choice or any additional gift they'd like. The results were:
While Christmas Bonuses have a strong appeal, there may be complexities in calculations (depending on your company's policies and structure). Extended holidays might also not be an option for all businesses, especially those that are seasonal or holiday-centric.
